Imagine going to work every day and being miserable. Turning up and being instantly unhappy when you walk through the door. How productive would you be?

Now imagine work was a joy and you looked forward to getting there and getting stuck in.

The first scenario is bad enough when you are employed but when you are running your own business and being miserable doing so then that’s just sad. In this scenario, you truly have the worst of both worlds. All the risk of running a business but with none of the happiness and freedom this can bring.

When work doesn’t feel like work great things can happen so the trick is to make your business a happy place. In my experience the only way your business can be a joy is to make sure you have all of your ducks in a row and that things run like clockwork.

When things work in your business, orders get sent out, invoices get raised and money comes in everyone is happy. When things break down and stop working then stress occurs amongst everyone involved.

A well-organised business is a joy to run, as the owner, you have the ultimate job.

So here are five simple things you can do to help your business run more smoothly:

  1. Plan – Plan your month, your day and your year so you know what you are going to achieve by when. There is nothing more satisfying than ticking things off a list knowing you achieved what you needed to.
  2. Systemise– System stands for Save Your Self Time Energy & M If you are going to delegate to your employees, then firstly you should document the processes you want them to follow. This will mean they won’t make it up as they go along, and you will be confident they are doing it your way. A systemised business runs smoothly things getting done in the correct way on time.
  3. Pick a great team – surround yourself with the right people avoid the wrong people. Get the right people on the bus and then get them in the right seats for the journey. When the right people are with you in your business it will fly have a few wrong ones and the whole thing will be a struggle. You will be fighting fires while your employees are playing with matches.
  4. Communicate – let your employees in on the plan, tell them the state of the business and share your burdens – no one is an island and a problem shared is a problem halved. So, once you are a great team keep them in the loop they will step up to help you grow the business.
  5. Get to know your numbers – not knowing the true financial position of your business can cause stress so get to know your numbers so you know if the business is working for you. Forecast cash and learn about your kpi’s it will reduce the worry.
